SUMMARY:Faculty-Postgrad Research Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our final Faculty-Postgrad research seminar of 2024 with Hollie Bailey and Scott Downman. \nHollie Bailey (Trinity’s MTS student) will be presenting her paper on ‘Journey from Charity to Community at Jacaranda Community Church: Action Research on the Process of Re-imagining the Annual Christmas Mission Event through the lens of an Asset Based Community Development Approach.’ \nScott Downman (Trinity’s Academic Dean and Lecturer in Missional Theology) and Tim Fawssett (Scripture Union’s Group Manager of Cross-Cultural Innovations) will be presenting ‘CHAT: Facilitating intercultural understanding and dialogue among youth and young adults in the church.’ \nAttendees are welcome to join us on campus with light refreshments served from 6pm before the seminar begins at 6:30pm. For those outside of Brisbane\, please request the livestream link. \nMonday October 14th  from 6pm at Trinity College Queensland\, Level 1\, 60 Bayliss Street\, Auchenflower. Enter the building facing Bayliss Street by taking the basement car park lift up to Trinity on Level 1. \nRegister Via Email \nLooking for more information about the topic? \nThe Australian church is becoming increasingly multicultural. The NCLS (2016) recognises most Australian churches are monocultural\, however\, compared to other nations\, Australia has a relatively high proportion of multicultural churches. For example\, in 2016\, approximately 23-percent of Australian churches were multicultural – where no one ethnic group accounts for 80-percent or more of the membership. This compares to 14-percent of churches in the US (NCLS\, 2016). However\, the multicultural church scene also presents significant challenges. \nEthnic siloing\, cross-cultural misunderstandings\, monocultural leadership and dominant cultural-driven preaching\, worship and music can contribute to tensions and conflict. In 2021\, SU Australia’s CHAT (Cultural Hearing Asking Telling) program was launched to address interfaith and cultural misunderstandings in schools. Focussed on the characteristics of healthy dialogue – listening\, asking and telling – the program aims to break cultural stereotypes\, misconceptions and create a platform for respectful communication and understanding. However\, in response to needs within the church\, the program has now been ‘repurposed’ for use in congregations with a new biblical CHAT Program to be piloted in the next year. This research explains the process for repurposing CHAT for the church and provides a snapshot into what Bible-based dialogue looks like.

SUMMARY:Understanding Modern Islam with Bernie Power
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free seminar about the opportunities for understanding and bridging the gap between Christians and Muslims. \nDr Bernie Power (Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations Lecturer at Melbourne School of Theology) and author of ‘Storyteller’ has spent four decades working with Muslims in Australia\, Asia\, and the Middle East. He has a deep heart to help Christians and Muslims understand more about each other and what they believe. \nThe number of Muslims in Brisbane has doubled in the past 15 years. In this ever-richer multicultural tapestry\, there is a growing presence of Muslims involved in our society. A steady stream of immigrants\, international students\, and second-generation residents ensures this trend will continue well into the future. Increasingly\, Islamic issues are in the headlines. Christians are also more likely than ever to encounter Muslims in work\, study\, or as our neighbours.  With this change\, comes opportunity. \n  \nTuesday October 15th  1pm-2.30pm at Trinity College Queensland\, Level 1\, 60 Bayliss Street\, Auchenflower. Limited parking is available onsite as well as street parking (please get a parking pass from Trinity to display in your car if you park onsite). \nTea and coffee provided. \nRegister Via Email

SUMMARY:Trinity Unplugged: Good Spiritual and Mental Health: Self-Doctoring for Belief-Sickness
DESCRIPTION:Overcome the grip of ‘belief sickness’ with Rev Dr Neil Pembroke as he unpacks the impact of unhealthy thinking and offers helpful strategies for lasting change. \nVirtually all of us suffer the ill-effects of irrational and unhealthy thoughts from time to time. Sometimes\, unhealthy thinking becomes ingrained. When this is the case\, we suffer from what some call “belief sickness”. \nBelief sickness takes psychological\, moral\, and spiritual forms. If\, for example\, a person believes that unless they are a complete success in life\, they are a total failure\, bouts of depression will likely ensue. Some Christians are afflicted by the belief sickness that if only my faith is strong enough\, nothing bad will come my way. \nYour speaker Rev Dr Neil Pembroke is an Associate Professor at Trinity College Queensland and an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Queensland. Neil specialises in pastoral care\, practical theology\, and the intersection of psychology and religion. His research interests encompass pastoral counselling\, spirituality in healthcare\, and the development of personal and spiritual maturity. \nRegister your interest by contacting ask@trinity.qld.edu.au or call on 3377 9950. \nThursday 27th February from 6:30pm at Trinity College Queensland\, Level 1\, 60 Bayliss Street\, Auchenflower. The session will also be available online. \n6.30pm light refreshments available\n7pm Intro to Neil\n7.10pm Talk\n8pm Q&A\n8.30pm finish \nRSVP by: Thursday\, 27th February 12pm latest. If registering on Thursday 27th\, please call Trinity College to confirm your details.
